CW Class:
Kent Trimble, K9ZTV, reporting – Last Saturday’s classes cancelled because of Ozarkcon. Will
continue next Saturday.
Training Committee:
Mike Thayer, KM0S, reporting – Eight to ten students working on General upgrade. Could use a
few more instructors.
Club Jackets / Shirts / Patches:
Bob Heald, W0XII, reporting – Got an e-mail from Bryan; shirts and hats are done, but the
company doing the work did not get the jacket order. That has been rectified and they are
waiting for jackets to be delivered to them. Apparently all items will be shipped at the same
time.
Mid-MO Emergency Radio Service:
Rich Kreiser, N0JBF, reporting – nothing to report.
Field Day 2013:
Mike Dolson, N0ZH, reporting – not much new. Believe all of our vehicles are good to go; CW
station in the same vehicle as before, FD trailer for sideband, Don’s trailer for VHF, and my
trailer for GOTA. We have all the vehicles we need. Discussion regarding the DPS van – Mike
talked to J.D. Simmons, WA0BER, who said it would either be Bruce Clemonds or Dave Martin
as the driver. I don’t know if they will stay the weekend or just deliver the van and pick it up.
We are not using the county van. May not need one of the personal trailers. Mike Miller will
coordinate the sideband operation. Field day is scheduled for June 22 and 23; we can set up on
evening of June 21. Extensive additional discussion. Mike asks that all who plan to participate
come to the next meeting with a tentative plan as to what you want to operate.
SOTA:
Bill Gerth, W4RK, reporting – We had a “SOTArama” in the Ozarks this past weekend,
coinciding with the Ozarkcon QRP convention. Six or eight SOTA enthusiasts from Kansas,
Arkansas, and Missouri. There were twenty five activations on nine different summits. It was
quite a lot of activity. We also had a booth at the vendor exhibits at Ozarkcon and talked to a lot
of interested people. If you would like to see some pictures, go to the website, www.mosota.org
and at the bottom of the home page, there is a link to the pictures.
New Business:
At the March meeting, Greg Abbott, WB0AQV, requested a report on the design status for radio at
the new St. Mary’s Health Center. Bob Heald, W0XII reporting – there will be two radio rooms
in the new facility: one in the patient tower, the other in the medical office building as backup.
Cable runs will be installed and shielded. Antennas will likely be mounted on top of the six story
patient tower.
Kent Trimble, K9ZTV, reporting on Ozarkcon – There was no Titanic function this year. It was
conducted for five years with the Nixa and Springfield clubs being involved. There was a lot of
enthusiasm the first year, but very little in the following years. Several of our members went
down and helped last year – they asked us to take it over and we declined. The only remaining
Titanic operation is coming up soon at Pigeon Forge, TN. This was the 10th anniversary of
Ozarkcon as a gathering of QRP enthusiasts. There was a Powerpoint presentation of the history
of the event. There were about 140 attendees, many were designers and builders. Several
worked QRP room to room on dummy loads. Technical advisor for telegraph in the movie
“Lincoln” gave a presentation on the apparatus that was used in the movie. The movie is well
worth seeing for a variety of reasons. The presentation was very interesting. I encourage
everyone to attend at least once whether you are into QRP or not. They have a wide range of
presentations and activities. It is the first weekend in April.
Jack Boswell, N0KSF, reporting – We have a “projects” group called “Mid MO Technical
Exchange Group” which meets once a month on the first Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Red Cross
Training Room. Everyone brings something they are working on and presents it as a show and
tell, following with discussion about the project. Part of the purpose is trying to promote interest
in the building and working of electronics.
Announcements:
Roger Conway, KD0FAS, questions:
a. Any progress on ARES Ids? Mike Dolson will check.
b. Was there mention of using solar power at Field Day? Richard Manning, AC0SA, talked about a
friend who has a solar array that he claimed could run quite a bit of the equipment. However,
what he has would not be sufficient to power all the equipment we use. We do get points for any
use of alternative energy, i.e.: charging a battery with a solar array then using that battery to
power a rig on which five contacts are made.
c. Any possibility of including the dates of upcoming Hamfests or other events in the minutes? The
ARRL website has a listing of those items linked from the home page.
Roger Barnard, WA0HAM, has a lot of old parts available to give away. If nobody wants them, they
will be disposed of. Anyone interested should contact Roger or Mike Dolson.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:09 p.m.
